Terms & Conditions

These Terms govern your access to and use of CivicCause websites, accounts, civic information services, professional tools, and communications.

Effective and last updated: October 10, 2026

Acceptance and eligibility

By using CivicCause, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you use CivicCause for an organization or another person, you represent that you have authority to do so. You must be at least 13 years old to use CivicCause. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

Civic information and source material

CivicCause organizes information from government records, public sources, publishers, participants, and other contributors. We work to preserve source identity and provenance, but information can be incomplete, delayed, corrected, or changed by its source. CivicCause is not a government agency, official record, law firm, financial adviser, or substitute for reviewing the cited source. Verify important information with the relevant official source before relying on it.

Accounts and workspaces

  • Provide accurate account information and keep it current.
  • Protect your password, authentication links, and account sessions.
  • Use only accounts and workspaces you are authorized to access.
  • Tell us promptly if you believe an account or workspace has been compromised.

Workspace owners and administrators may manage membership and content for their workspace. CivicCause may suspend access where reasonably necessary to protect the service, other users, source integrity, or legal compliance.

Participant and submitted content

CivicCause may allow organizations, candidates, publishers, public officials, professionals, and residents to submit profiles, positions, endorsements, comments, applications, corrections, or other content. You are responsible for content you submit and must have the rights and authority needed to submit it.

You retain ownership of your submitted content. You grant CivicCause a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, format, display, distribute, and otherwise use that content as reasonably needed to operate, secure, improve, and present CivicCause and its civic records. This license lasts while the content is used by the service and as reasonably needed for backups, provenance, legal compliance, and dispute resolution.

Attribution and neutrality

Statements, positions, endorsements, comments, and other participant content are attributable to their stated source. Displaying, linking, organizing, or accepting content does not mean CivicCause endorses, agrees with, ranks, or guarantees it. You may not imply that CivicCause endorses you or your views without written permission.

Professional and paid services

Prices, billing intervals, included features, and any purchase-specific terms are shown at checkout or when an offer is made. If a purchase is identified as a recurring subscription, the payment method provided may be charged at the stated interval until cancellation. You can cancel using an available account or billing-portal control, or by contacting CivicCause. Access may continue through an already-paid period where the applicable offer provides for it, then expire or return to the available free service.

Payments are processed by a third-party payment provider. Any refund, credit, or proration is governed by the terms presented at purchase and applicable law. Contact admin@civiccause.com with billing questions. Some participation or access programs may have separate eligibility and payment terms.

Text messages and messaging

When CivicCause offers text messaging, you will be enrolled only after a separate affirmative consent for the described communication. A messaging consent control must be unchecked by default. Creating an account, joining an organization, purchasing Professional access, or making another purchase does not by itself provide consent to receive text messages, and consent is not a condition of purchase or use of CivicCause.

  • Messages are limited to conversational or follow-up communications related to the CivicCause inquiry for which you consented.
  • Consent does not cover newsletters, civic alerts, or unrelated marketing or promotional messages.
  • Messages may be supported by automated or AI-assisted systems and authorized human representatives.
  • Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply.
  • Reply STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for assistance.
  • Wireless carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages, and delivery is not guaranteed.

CivicCause will offer a messaging channel only while the supporting system can honor the consent, assistance, and opt-out requirements described here.

AI-assisted features

Some features use automated or AI-assisted processing. Outputs may be incomplete or contain errors and should be checked against cited source material. The scope and principles for those features are described in our AI Use & Intent page.

Acceptable use

You may not use CivicCause to:

  • Break the law, infringe rights, impersonate others, or submit content you lack authority to provide.
  • Harass, threaten, deceive, spam, or distribute malicious or unlawful content.
  • Bypass security or access controls, probe systems without authorization, or interfere with service operation.
  • Scrape, copy, or automate access in a way that imposes unreasonable load or violates source or third-party rights.
  • Use CivicCause content or systems to train a model or build a competing database or service without permission where permission is required.

CivicCause property and third-party services

CivicCause and its licensors retain rights in the service, software, design, trademarks, and original content. These Terms do not transfer those rights to you. Public records and third-party content remain subject to their respective rights and terms. Links, embedded services, payment tools, and source websites are operated by third parties under their own terms and privacy practices.

Service changes, suspension, and termination

CivicCause may change, pause, or discontinue features and may limit or terminate access for violations of these Terms, security risks, nonpayment, legal requirements, or operational needs. You may stop using the service at any time. Terminating an account does not require CivicCause to remove public government records or independently sourced civic information, and provisions that by their nature should survive will survive.

Disclaimers

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CIVICCAUSE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” CIVICCAUSE DISCLAIMS IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT CIVIC INFORMATION WILL ALWAYS BE COMPLETE, CURRENT, OR ACCURATE. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN DISCLAIMERS, SO SOME OF THESE TERMS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CIVICCAUSE AND ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND SERVICE PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR OPPORTUNITIES ARISING FROM THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF $100 OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID CIVICCAUSE FOR THE RELEVANT SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM. THESE LIMITS DO NOT APPLY WHERE THEY ARE PROHIBITED BY LAW.

Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless CivicCause and its affiliates, officers, employees, and service providers from claims, losses, liabilities, and expenses arising from your submitted content, your misuse of the service, or your violation of these Terms or another person's rights.

Governing law and disputes

California law governs these Terms, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any lawsuit arising from these Terms or CivicCause must be brought in a state or federal court located in Santa Clara County, California, and each party consents to those courts' jurisdiction. These Terms do not require mandatory arbitration and do not include a class action waiver.

Changes and contact

We may update these Terms as the service changes. We will post revised Terms here and update the date above. Material changes may also be communicated through the service or another appropriate channel. Continued use after updated Terms take effect means you accept them.

Questions may be sent to admin@civiccause.com or through our contact page.
