Dear Civic,
This time of year is one of my favorites. Except for a very warm first week in October, the weather cools down and it becomes sweater weather, and it’s the start of the holiday season with Halloween.
I love seeing all the decorations and the children in their costumes. Please remember to drive carefully so that our trick or treaters get home safely on Halloween night!
After Halloween, as we move into November, I’m excited to host a Senior Symposium on Thursday, November 5, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Camden Community Center! I want to make sure our older adults have the information and resources they need to stay safe, prepared, and connected.
This symposium is something that I have wanted to present for a long time. I couldn’t be more pleased to have the staff to make it happen as one of my final events before my term on City Council comes to an end in December.
We’ll have four informative presentations covering some of the topics that matter most to our community: * Fraud & Scam Prevention from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, with tips on how to recognize and avoid scams * Personal Safety from the San José Police Department, with information to help you stay safe at home and in the community * Emergency Preparedness from the City’s Office of Emergency Management, to ensure you have an emergency plan and supplies ready * Estate Planning 101 with a local attorney who will walk through the basics of estate planning and help you better understand the important documents involved
Each presenter will also have a resource table where you can ask additional questions and learn more before or after their presentation.
We’ll also have additional resource tables and information from a variety of organizations and City departments, including PRNS senior classes and programs, SJFD, San José 311, SJPL, Medicare assistance, caregiving and senior care resources, and more!
This will be a welcoming, informative afternoon with light refreshments, opportunities to ask questions, and plenty of resources to take home. You’re also welcome to pop in and out of the presentations based on the topics that are most helpful to you or just stop by for the resource tables.
To receive additional event information, please sign up (https://forms.gle/Kqq2NGyEMKosyqJa9?mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID) here (https://forms.gle/Kqq2NGyEMKosyqJa9?mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID) . (https://forms.gle/Kqq2NGyEMKosyqJa9?mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID)
I hope you’ll join us on November 5th! Until then, be safe and enjoy the season.
Sincerely,

The Work Plan includes a four-part strategy focusing on shelter system functionality, permanent placement throughput, public space management, and regional accountability to more frequently track and reduce San José's unsheltered population. A new data model for the City synthesizes 15+ metrics for real-time tracking and it shows that San José’s unsheltered homelessness has dropped 32% over 18 months. Driven by over 1,000 new shelter beds and targeted street strategies, this approach has moved more than 1,700 people off the streets since January 2025 and we are looking to make even more progress in the coming years. Temporary Moratorium Related to Detention and Custodial Facility on Private Property (https://sanjose.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=8214876&GUID=002181B1-D25D-4B9A-83A9-6E2F6260069D&Options=&Search=&mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID) In San José, we value our immigrant residents. Nearly 41% of our City’s population is made up of immigrants. These people make San José great. That is why I was deeply disturbed to learn about the proposed ICE detention facility in South County. While there is no such proposal in San José, it’s important that we are proactive to ensure that we are prepared to respond to such as proposal if it does come to our City. Evidence from other jurisdictions shows that these detention facilities could have negative impacts on health, safety, and the environment where they are located.
The Council unanimously approved an ordinance instituting moratorium on new detention and custodial facilities in San Jose to the extent permitted under federal and state law.

Dry Creek Crossing represents what we can accomplish we invest in the community, look out for our neighbors, and make sure San José is a place where people can afford to live.
What makes Dry Creek Crossing particularly meaningful is the depth of affordability it provides. This community includes homes affordable to households earning 30 to 60 percent of the Area Median Income. Affordable housing is vital for social equity, economic stability, and the health and well-being of our communities, and it too is a necessary component to reduce homelessness. I'm grateful to everyone who made this project possible, and am so proud to welcome my newest District 9 residents! Whoop whoop! That's the sound of our District 9 firefighters keeping San José safe! Last month, I made my way to Fire Stations 9, 13, and 17 to show my gratitude to our community’s first responders. I owe a special thanks to Battalion Chief Thomas for escorting me to the fire houses and to our District 9 firefighters for being so welcoming! Viva Calle: Into the Valley was a tremendous success! I cannot believe the amazing turnout we had for the very first Viva Calle event in South San José. It was such a blast seeing everyone come out and enjoy the open streets and festivities. These types of community gatherings are the events I'm going to look back on and miss the most! That's a wrap on my final time cohosting Disability Inclusion Day! This year's event featured an important name adjustment from Disability Awareness Day to recognizing the evolution of the event beyond raising awareness toward fostering greater acceptance, inclusion, and belonging for people with disabilities. I'm so grateful to everyone that came out and enjoyed the 18th annual celebration with performances, resources, and fun activities!
On September 15th, the City Council heard an update on our five Focus Areas (https://sanjose.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=8196842&GUID=E92B9D66-7A36-44E9-95EF-6293E31EA8B2&Options=&Search=&mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID) , which are the five priorities for the City Council and Administration to drive improvements and positive outcomes. One important Focus Area is Increasing Community Safety. Many of the performance indicators under the Increasing Community Safety Focus Area show that the City’s work has been improving safety citywide. Residents are feeling safer across the community as perceptions of safety have improved by 5% citywide compared to last year based on the City’s community survey. Year-over-year, crime rates have declined across all three major categories by 5-7%. Traffic safety remains stable with opportunities for future improvements. Although fatal and severe injury collisions are elevated for this year; however, there has been a decline in fatal and severe injury collisions in the previous three years.
The City is focused on continuing to improve public safety by increasing response times, increasing the number of sworn officers, and advancing policies and practices that make our Police and Fire departments more efficient and effective. https://trk.email.thepwhl.com/l/01M3Z33BS8CN3YXVQKXM9SB725_7?mc_cid=4399a64da0&mc_eid=UNIQID
