Hi !
I'll share the most exciting topic first, the budget and our fiscal issues! Just kidding. =) It is very important so please read and then I'll share exciting October events and board items.
On September 29th, the Board voted to approve a revised budget for this fiscal year. The budget continues funding for healthcare, public safety, food assistance, and other safety net services, along with long-term capital projects to continue progress on affordable housing and infrastructure investments. This budget assumes that San Mateo County will receive the full Vehicle License Fee amount from the state, because it is what we are owed. While the state has committed (https://us.list-manage.com/ZOMiXH2uHOg?e=118eb8f15f&c2id=aa69b3dee4a8d1e79e3540741ed3b703) to working with us to fix the VLF budget problem for next year, we are beginning to prepare for cuts to Measure K and the General Fund in case they are needed. You can click here (https://us.list-manage.com/15i6wBqHVTP?e=118eb8f15f&c2id=aa69b3dee4a8d1e79e3540741ed3b703) to view the revised budget slides from the staff presentation. We will continue to keep our community updated as we learn more.
As we close out Latine Heritage Month, join us in continuing to find ways to celebrate the culture, history, and contributions of our Latine community. One idea is to stop by and appreciate the sculpture of the Mexican Angel of Independence created by Fernando Escartiz artist and Creative Consultant Casa Circulo Cultural (https://us.list-manage.com/aZMvkIddCEy?e=118eb8f15f&c2id=aa69b3dee4a8d1e79e3540741ed3b703) that now stands on the first floor of 500 County Center. The golden figure is a replica of the monument that rises above Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, 2,000 miles away. The original was unveiled in 1910 to mark 100 years since the start of Mexico's War of Independence. She is inspired by Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. In one hand, she holds a laurel crown. In the other, a broken chain for the end of 300 years of Spanish rule. Casa Circulo Cultural was honored, along with Latino Community Council of Redwood City (https://us.list-manage.com/UqTVEjUDXr3?e=118eb8f15f&c2id=aa69b3dee4a8d1e79e3540741ed3b703) , at our board meeting on 9/29 for their partnership in creating and hosting decades of county-wide and culturally-rich Fiestas Patrias celebrations in Redwood City.
We also recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day on 10/12 as an opportunity to honor the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land for generations and to remember that Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions continue today. Fernando's sculpture elevates indigenous freedom from Spanish colonization.
October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to uplift survivors, honor lives lost, and raise awareness. At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, we heard from Peggy Sherbon of the Family Justice Center, Karen Ferguson of CORA, and Faviola Gonzalez and Denise López, organizers of Connie’s Run. The annual race honors Connie, a devoted mother of four and beloved preschool director whose life was tragically taken by her partner in 2021. Through Connie’s Run, we remember those lost to domestic violence, support survivors and their families, and turn grief into meaningful action.
