Bio

Pamela Campos is a historic and rising figure in San José politics. She is the youngest woman ever elected to the San José City Council, bringing a deeply personal, community-rooted perspective to City Hall. She assumed office on January 1, 2025, and her current term runs through December 31, 2028.

The proud daughter of immigrants and the eldest of four daughters, Campos grew up in the Vista Park neighborhood of South San José and attended local schools, from Horace Mann Elementary to Gunderson High School. Her family background has been a defining force in her public life — she recalls marching with her family for immigrant rights as a middle schooler, an experience that ignited her passion for advocacy.

Campos was the first in her family to earn a college degree, graduating from San José State University with dual degrees in Spanish Language and Child and Adolescent Development. After graduating, she began her career as a preschool teacher, earning modest wages despite her degree — an experience that opened her eyes to the chronic undervaluing of early childhood educators and led her more deeply into advocacy work. Her experience working with families and fellow educators eventually led her to nonprofit work and community advocacy across South San José.

Before running for council, Campos worked closely with community partners, analyzed policies, and spearheaded initiatives, consistently advocating for issues that directly impact working families, including affordable housing, child care, and equitable transportation systems. She served as a policy and program officer with expertise in the Early Care and Education field, and was affiliated with organizations including Saved By Nature and Child Advocates of Silicon Valley.

Inspired by the civic engagement and energy surrounding the 2020 election, she decided to enter public service, recognizing the need for strong, community-driven leadership. She ran in 2024 for the District 2 seat being vacated by terming Councilmember Sergio Jimenez, who endorsed her as his successor. She won with the backing of the South Bay Labor Council and the Santa Clara County Democratic Party, as well as endorsements from multiple sitting councilmembers and county supervisors. She defeated retired Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy Joe Lopez in the November 5, 2024 general election.

District 2 stretches from the border of Morgan Hill northward through South San José — the very communities where Campos was raised. Her policy priorities center on affordable housing, child care access, homelessness, and economic equity for working-class families. She has proposed reallocating developer impact fees to fund new child care facilities and a city child care coordinator position, and has been outspoken about the need for government at every level to invest in early childhood education as both a social and economic imperative.

In her brief time in office, Campos has already drawn attention as a progressive voice on a sometimes-divided council, unapologetically centering the experiences of immigrant families, low-income residents, and communities of color in her policy work. She is widely regarded as a natural successor to the progressive legacy of District 2 and a future leader in Santa Clara County politics.
