Sheriff's Office Aftermath — Rebuilding Accountability & Trust
active• sanmateo
San Mateo County is still working through the fallout of one of the most dramatic law enforcement governance crises in the Bay Area in recent memory. In May 2025, an independent investigation found evidence of conflicts of interest, misuse of authority, and retaliation by Sheriff Christina Corpus against employees within the Sheriff's Office — and in October 2025, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to remove her, made possible by Measure A, which 84% of San Mateo County voters had approved earlier that year to strengthen oversight of the Sheriff. The aftermath continues: former Sheriff Corpus filed a defamation claim against the county in April 2026, alleging county officials spread false statements that damaged her reputation and led to the suspension of her peace officer certification. Meanwhile, the Board authorized a $127,200 independent financial audit of the Sheriff's Office covering the last three years of Corpus's budget management practices, including procurement, payroll, and overtime. The new sheriff must now rebuild department morale, address staffing gaps created by the crisis, and restore public confidence.
