Council District 8 Newsletter Hi Neighbor, I'm sure many of you are excited to hear about our next District 8 Dumpster Day ! But did you know that San José has a FREE Junk Pickup Program ? Through the City’s program, residents can schedule a collection for large household items that don’t fit in regular garbage carts. It’s a simple, stress-free way to responsibly dispose of unwanted furniture, mattresses, and other oversized items. Requesting an appointment is quick! Contact San José 311 by phone (408) 535-3500, online , or through the app. If you're making an appointment online or through the app, you will need to create an account. Having an account with San Jos é 311 also gives you the ability to receive updates and submit reports for other issues, such as illegal dumping, graffiti, and streetlight outages. Once your appointment is confirmed, set out your items on the scheduled day, and let us handle the heavy lifting. A cleaner home and a cleaner community? That’s a win-win. Lastly, let's help keep our neighborhoods looking their best by reporting any illegal dumping! If you're interested in organizing a beautification event in your community, please reach out to my office by sending us an email ( district8@sanjoseca.gov ) or giving us a call (408-535-4908). It is my pleasure and privilege to serve as your City Councilmember, Domingo Candelas City of San José District 8 Learn more about our community work and accomplishments in my past newsletters from February 2023 onward , which provide a wealth of information including updates on legislation, community events, and important issues like the City budget, public safety, homelessness and more. Please share this with your neighbors and let them know what's happening in my district. They can sign up by following this link . Statement of Support On February 7th, a San José State University student was assaulted and had his turban forcibly removed while walking on campus — an act that is both deeply disturbing and unacceptable. Let me be clear: hate and violence have no place in the City of San José. The freedom to practice one’s faith is a cornerstone of our society. Whether on a college campus, in their neighborhood, or anywhere in our city, everyone has the right to feel safe, respected, and supported. I proudly represent District 8, home to one of the largest Sikh American communities in the state and the largest Sikh Gurdwara outside of India. Our Sikh American neighbors are an integral part of San José’s identity. From small business owners and community leaders to innovators driving Silicon Valley’s technology sector, Sikh families have long helped shape the success and strength of our city. I stand in solidarity with the Sikh community and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of every resident. Upcoming Events San Jose's Music Mania Festival This March, San Jose will be hosting a 3-day musical takeover! From heavy-hitting bass to global pop and boot-kicking country, this line-up has something for everyone! Use code DISTRICT8 to unlock different tiers of admission. Visit the website to buy your tickets today! Tickets will go fast! Budget Breakfast Grace Church of Evergreen (2650 Aborn Rd) 9:30am - 11:00am RSVP here Want to voice your thoughts on the organization of the city budget and policy priorities? The Budget Summit , hosted on Saturday, February 28th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM is crucial in ensuring youth civic power at the local level and informing the City of San José Youth Commission about the needs and priorities of local youth. The Youth Commission will gather input from this Youth Participatory Budgeting Program pilot to request upwards of $10,000 from the city to fund youth-ideated and youth-voted projects. This event features presentations, discussions about city departments and their funding, Youth Commissioner introductions, and more! Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please register as soon as possible before registration is filled. In Our Community National Girls and Women in Sports Day Here in San Jose, we remain committed to celebrating the achievements of girls and young women in sports and expanding their leadership opportunities! This month, we celebrated the strength, grit, and greatness of women in sports. I had the honor of proclaiming February 4th as National Girls and Women in Sports Day alongside my colleague Councilmember Peter Ortiz and Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative. NAACP Advocating for Justice Exhibit In honor of Black History Month, King Library has an exhibition of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) historical artifacts. This exhibit includes pieces collected by District 8 resident, Dawn Spears! The pieces will be displayed on the 5th floor of King Library until March 1st. Evergreen School District Speech Contest Congratulations to all of the winners and participants of the Evergreen School District Speech Contest! I had a wonderful time seeing all of the talented speakers. Special shoutout to the JFS Musical Jaguars for their lively performance and thank you to Silver Creek Academy for hosting this year's event. Small Business Spotlight Club Pilates I'm excited to welcome Club Pilates as a new wellness destination for our community! Club Pilates offers expertly led, low-impact fitness programs that support strength, mobility, and overall well-being. No matter your age or level of fitness, there’s a Pilates class that will work for you! Take a step towards reaching your fitness goals and book a free intro class on their website ! City Hall Update As we approach the next fiscal year, it is important for us to understand the budget challenges in front of us while also advocating for programs that will benefit our community. That is why I co-authored a memo with Councilmembers Doan, Campos, and Ortiz asking the City Manager's Office to elevate Emergency Medical Services Field Coordination and Mobile Integrated Health Care and Community Paramedicine as legislative priorities for our city. When paramedics can safely treat patients in place, refer them to appropriate care, or transport them to alternative destinations, we reduce avoidable emergency department visits, improve patient outcomes, and restore capacity to an overwhelmed system. By supporting these programs, we can improve emergency response and deliver better outcomes for our residents while reducing strain on our first responders and city budget. Second, the City Council voted to place a measure on the June 2, 2026, ballot to increase the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax from 10% to 12% and increase the City’s General Fund portion of the Transient Occupancy (hotel) Tax from 4% to 6%. If the measure passes, the 2% allocation increase could generate an additional $10 million in annual revenue for the city's General Fund. The additional funds will help maintain essential city services, such as park maintenance, illegal dumping collection, and graffiti removal. Lastly, the City of San Jose and Santa Clara County will be conducting weed abatement and removing dry hazardous vegetation on vacant private properties throughout the city, including properties in District 8. Property owners have been notified of minimum fire safety standards and will still have the option of abating weeds and dry hazardous vegetation themselves before March 1, 2026. Property owners are responsible for an annual fee of $296 to cover the cost of the compliance inspection. Parcels found not compliant on or after the March 1, 2026, deadline will be charged a processing fee of $953, and the property will be scheduled for abatement by the County and its contractors.
